A day at the Mill
The Hempnall Luncheon Club is open to Hempnall residents on Wednesdays and Thursdays for 50 weeks a year, hosted by Margaret Sparham. It provides a social hub for the retired and other residents with specific needs.
People arrive from 11am when coffee and biscuits are available, to spend time with others, read the newspapers, before lunch is served at 12.0pm. Lunch is a two course cooked meal using locally sourced ingredients, followed by tea or coffee and costs £2.50. Birthdays are celebrated with a glass of wine or juice.
Margaret organises a book and jigsaw borrowing service, as well as a range of other activities after lunch for those wishing to stay longer, eg.
- on alternate Wednesdays an Over 60s club at 1.30pm;
- bingo or carpet bowls often on Thursdays, with matches arranged too with a group from Woodton. Quizzs are held, again involving other groups too;
- other activities including raffles, Grand National sweep stake, trips to the coast.
We have close links with Hempnall Church and the local clergy provide a service with Holy Communion on the first Thursday of each month for those wishing to attend.
During the year coffee mornings are held to raise money for day outings to places like Dunwich and Lowestoft, which prove to be very popular. The Hempnall Trust partly funds these.
